There is the possibility that the entire universe is just one big virtual particle. The vacuum genesis hypothesis theorizes that the entire universe began as a big fluctuation in the "nothing" that came before it. While it hasn't been proven, it sure is an interesting idea to think about: that in the end, all we- you, me, the whole universe - add up to a big bunch of nothing. Our universe may sit on a platform of shoddy construction, a " metastable" vacuum that is doomed - in the distant future- to transform into another sort of nothing, destroying everything in the process. The most we can say with confidence at this stage is that physics has so far found no confirmed instance of something arising from nothing .
