Wiring an attic thermostat

How can I use an attic thermostat to control a receptacle with a fan plugged into the receptacle? I want the receptacle to turn the fan off/on. I already have an old thermostat.

Have you tried wiring the new one by putting the same color wires on the same labeled posts - For instance red on R and so on? Just pay close attention to which has the blue wire.

Is this a thermostat that deals with high voltage or is it a more modern one that just sends low DC control voltages?

They also make things to do this easily. Here is an example
