Morning, everyone.

New poster here, or, I should say, new to the forum.

I think I may stay for a while - looks like there are enough topics to keep even my short attention span interested.

Anything I should know?

Cheers.

Good morning back at ya; glad to have you here.

If you click on "at a glance" in the upper right corner of your screen, you will see all of the threads on this site. Just pick a few to click on and jump right in. Once you've posted a reply to a thread, it will appear in "your posts" on the upper left side of your screen. That seems to be the way most A2Kers keep track of their interests.

Of course, you also can scan the list of thread subjects on the left side of your screen if you are interested in certain topics.

If you see a thread you are interested in but don't want to reply at that moment, just reply with a bm. That's not a bowel movement, its a book mark that will put the thread into the list of "your posts" to make it easy for you to track it.

A2K is very easy to navigate.

I was looking for something more along the lines of "<insert poster's name> is a rabble-rouser and they should be avoided at all costs." or "<insert poster's name > is a spelling and grammar nazi, beware!"

But anything is helpful, thanks.

Thanks! That's a handy feature. I'll be using it often.

Two questions for you - 1) is "bm" your version of the thread bump or what? and 2) Does this place get busier at different times of day?

"bm" stands for "bookmark," and is a means of ensuring that the thread so bookmarked will appear in the "your posts" link on the upper left-hand corner. The site generally follows and American schedule, as most of the members are in the United States and Canada. But the site remains active throughout the day, as there are quite a few members from England and Europe, and from OZ and east Asia. Heavist usage is on the American schedule, though.

We leave those traits up to the A2K poster to discover on their own. It doesn't take long. Most A2K long-term posters are really great people. The other sort, flamers, etc. usually don't last long here. They are largely ignored and they lose interest and go somewhere else to bug people.

That doesn't mean that we don't have intense discussions, especially on the politics and religions threads. Most of them are civil. If not, they eventually get locked.

To respectfully contradict Bumblebee, I don't think it is so that the large majority of posters follow their threads by using At a Glance and then either posting or bm'g and then following Your Posts. Many do, yes. But I think I saw a thread on that once, and quite a hefty number use either New Posts or New Posts combined with email updates. And some just check into the one forum they are interested in. I think it's a virtue of a2k to have so many ways to deal with the site, for people have different likes and needs.

Morning, Cleo. Bm does not stand for bowel movement. It does stand for "bookmark." It's a way some posters keep track of a thread they're interested in following even though they have nothing to add at the moment. You can post anything -- bm, rsvp, ls/mft, whatever -- and that will automatically insure that all further posts to that thread will go right into the "Your Posts" file. Actually, it's just a habit for people who've used this method on other forums, most notably the now-defunct Abuzz. On this site, you don't really need to do that. You can just click on the "Turn on email updates" thingy at the lower right hand corner and accomplish the same purpose.

As for warning you about the foibles of some members -- well, you'll soon form your own opinions. On the religion and philosophy forum, watch out for Frankapisa. He's the only militant agnostic I've ever encountered. Don't argue with Setanta about history. For a fat Irish kid from Ohio, he knows way too much for his own good. If you ever run across gustavratzenhofer, run like hell. (Of course, if you've flattened him out by running across him, there's no need to panic.)

Other than that, just stay off the grassy areas, don't feed the wild animals and please pick up any discarded rubbish and dispose of it properly. Welcome!

Interesting! I'm liking this place more and more. Thanks for the explanation - it's nice to not have to find out everything by happy accident. Wink

Sounds familiar. I'm glad to see the range of topics discussed, though.

Not to mention the Spellcheck feature! I love that already!

Thank you, Lady J.

Do you have any favorite spots you frequent in particular?
