As for the zone of visibility, a large portion of the contiguous United States,
south-central and eastern Canada (including the Maritime Provinces), Mexico,
Central and South America and a small slice of West Africa are the regions of
the world well-positioned for this event.
I didn't see a single meteor. I hiked out to a meadow at midnight for the occasion, which was enjoyable in its own right, but no show.
I was encouraged by witnessing the meteor storm of about 20 years ago. The meteors were fireballs low in the sky, horizontal and lasting seconds before they burned out. I guess that was the "once in a lifetime" phenomenon.

A couple of decades, or so, ago, I once heard a meteor sizzle in the sky before it disappeared while I was kicking back at a park. I think I was able to smell it, as well.
