First of all, I am not a roofer - I am just a DIY'er. But I asked my insurance company if they would allow me to apply a coat of elastomeric roof coating on my shingle roof here in NM. I said that I cringe when I see shingles with asphalt and asphalt substitutes. It is like - seriously? Those will probably only last 30 years. Surely the life can be extended by another 20 years.

I have seen what can happen to tar and plastics in heat or UV environments. I used to be a plastics lab technician. I've seen plastics age until they shatter.

I continued by explaining that five years ago put 5 coats over the shingles on my sister's roof in Florida. I've not seen any expansion or shrinkage, no condensation and it seems to be working really well. ANOTHER ROOFER INSTALLED IT ON A NEIGHBOR'S ROOF IN FLORIDA! IT IS DOING WELL THERE ALSO! And, AND the roofer said the owner does nothing to maintain it even though years of leaves are piled up in the valley of that gable roof! That roofer is concerned small roots could somehow start growing into the coating.

Here in New Mexico, where the climate is totally different, almost a year ago, I put it on a small area of our roof. That small area has shown no problems and I suspect there will be no cracking or curling of those shingles for years to come. It's only been a bit less than a year, but the coated shingles seem to be doing better than the uncoated shingles. Of course I do not expect condensation here in this dry New Mexico climate. There is no evidence of shrinkage or expansion after seasons of very hot and very cold sub-zero weather.

Now I do not socialize a lot with people. I am more of a worker and pretty shy. So I admit that I do not know everything. I just try to get things done.

So anyway, I asked my insurance company to send me an email address of someone in inspections that is reasonable and will work with us on this. It's been quite some time now and I've not gotten an answer. So now I guess I'll have to get answers from this forum.

I will appreciate reasonable and legitimate answers here on this forum. The question is, will the insurance company allow me to apply at least one coat of elastomeric roof coating to my ENTIRE roof here in New Mexico?
Thanks.

My guess is that if you take it into your own hands without permission you would be denied any future claims. But it is not my expertise to say definitively.
