Hi all,

I'd very much appreciate if anyone has an idea on the source of this quotation said to be from Robert Cecil, the 17th century Secretary of State under James I.

If it is him, I can't find the original source anywhere. Here it is:

"The king’s excessive kindness has ended in this, that Catholic priests go openly about the country saying mass. This gives great offence to others. We cannot hope for good government while we have a large number of… …Catholics. The priests preach that Catholics must even kill the King to help their religion".

There are a few sources with this quotation that pop up under a basic search in relation to Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot but none of them provide a source.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

@Rasrock,
I don't know where you are.

When I visited Hampton Court a few years back, there were actors role playing historical figures. I had quite a long chat with the bloke playing Cecil.

If anyone would know Cecil's quotes it would be him.

There is also a book by David Loades called The Cecils, privilege and power behind the throne.

It's available on both Amazon and ebay.

There is also a very recent book called Devil-land by Clare Jackson. This depicts the hundred years from the execution of Mary Queen of Scots to the Dutch invasion by William of Orange.

During this time England was seen as very much out of sync with the rest of Europe, a rogue nation as it were.
