I haven't seen any toads this summer. What happened to them?
Plenty of frogs around. No toads.
Should I be worried?
No toads in a swamp? Not good.
I once had tad-poles swiming up and down my spine but that's when I lived down on the Mobile Line.
We have a good supply of toads here in the Catskills. In early spring, if you go outside at night with a flashlight, you can watch them having toad sex. We know when they are doing it because first they trill to each to other.

Yeah we see that here in our neighbord as well except it's just our neighbors, not toads.
I've never had the opportunity to watch toad sex with a flashlight, but it sounds highly entertaining.
But, in all seriousness, I have not seen a single toad this summer and, frankly, it is causing me a considerable amount of distress.
Gus- You are welcome to come and watch our toad orgy next spring. Bring your own booze.
I can think of two possible reasons you are having a toad shortage 1. Like most creatures toads breed in cycles, booms and busts - you might be experiencing a bust.
2 - Do you live near any farms, golf courses or neighbors that spray a lot of RoundUp herbicide? It has been known to effect the populations of ground dwelling creatures such as toads and salamaders.
If there is anyone around here spraying chemicals, I'll kick the **** out of 'em.
I think you're right about the cycle thing, GW. I've seen the same thing happen with frogs.
Seems like the toads' cycle would follow their food cycle. Don't frogs eat moths as well as other bugs? If the moth's are up, why are the toads down?
That's why I started this thread, littlek, to get answers to the tough questions.
All of which reminds me very little of the old stock market analogy that when skirts go up the market goes down. Interesting thought when applied to toads isn't it?
That's a pretty damn old article, littlek.
Not that I don't appreciate your efforts though.
Here's a picture of Linda Knox, master gardener....
I wonder if that could possibly be Green Witch?
Well, you're welcome. You feeling feisty tonight, Gus?
Put 250 000$ in small bills into a suitcase and wait for me to call. Otherwise the toads get it.
No Cops. get it?
