Ontology is the part of philosophy that studies what it means to exist or the nature of being. The branch of metaphysics dealing with reality or ultimate substance. It is the study of things in the Universe. In other words, what kind of things exist. It deals with the first principle and essence of things. Ontology is concerned with what actually exists in the world about which humans can acquire knowledge. Ontology helps researchers recognize how certain they can be about the nature of existence of objects they are researching. Realist ontology relates to the existence of one single reality which can be studied, understood and experienced as a truth; a real world exists independent of human experience. Meanwhile, relativist ontology is based on the philosophy that reality is constructed within the human mind, such that no one true reality exists. Instead, reality is relative according to how individuals experience it at any given time and place. Ontology is the science of what is, of the kinds and structures of objects, properties, events, processes and relations in every area of reality. The study of what might exist. An account of being in the abstract. An ontology is a formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualization. Those who deal in ontology try to understand why a particular event occurs and how it is related to other happenings. It tries to find out what is there in the Universe. Ontology is about what is true.
