What can you apply to shoelaces that don't stay tied?

@Pittter,
First, are you tying a proper square knot?

@Pittter,

If the loops of your bow are pointing toward the toe and heel, your knot is incorrect.

@Region Philbis,
I think the pro;lem lies in the material. Natural fibers have microscopic hairs which interlock and rub against each other to provide friction against coming untied. Synthetic fibers are smooth extruded tubes, no. Friction. If I. Have shorts with no deep pockets I wear my key ring on a long new, I
E. Synthetic shoelace around my neck knotted at the endv and ji can quintuple knot it and it still unknots itself. So far haven't lost the keys in spite of the lace's best efforts.

If tying a tight know is a problem due to poor fine motor skills or weakness in the hand muscles? There are no-tie shoelace options you can buy on Amazon, etc....

Rosin, like violinists use, might work if you rubbed it on your laces. There are "belt dressings" that increase friction as well.

Double knot works for me for 40 years of exercise and sneaker wearing.

@hightor,
Cheaper and easier to just buy a different type of laces. Can't believe I'm even responding on this thread about... shoelaces. Good grief.

When I was a boy I had trouble with my shoestrings. One morning my stepfather stood over me as I tied them. I was pulling the knots as tight as I could. He said, "You tie them tight." Since I was already tying the knots as tight as possible, I was literal-minded enough to think he meant to lace them tight. For at least a year I tightened the strings way too tight. Not good for the feet.
