A magnetar, which is also known as an ultra- magnetic neutron star is believed to have an extremely powerful magnetic field. The decay of this field powers the emission of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, particularly x-rays and gamma rays. The magnetic field is a thousand trillion times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field. If you were unlucky enough to be just about a thousand miles from a magnetar, the magnetic force would kill you instantly by rearranging all the atoms and molecules in your body. The gravitational force would literally tear you apart. A magnetar just 100,000 miles away from the Earth would wipe out all the data in every credit card in the world. Magnetars can reach surface temperatures of 18 million degrees Fahrenheit.
