I want to run 6 awg wire from the service panel of the main house to an outside building. Do I have to put the wire in conduit or plastic electrical pipe or can I staple it to the floor joist?

You need to check the electrical codes in your state, but you almost certainly have to put it in some sort of conduit if it is going outside your house.
