What is your hair like in terms of straight, curly, etc...?
How much maintenance are you willing to put into it? Blowdrying, curling, hair products, etc...
I agree that a drastic haircut (12"+) can be great. I've never shaved my head, but have gone drastic a few times.
It is wavy and heavy. I don't want a lot of maintenance. I want to be able to put it in a ponytail (even if only 2 inches long!) but I don't know if I will be able to.
I've gone with a buzz-cut, myself. Of course, my hair could never be described as "thick." MIA, possibly, but not thick.

Sounds similar to mine, Bella -- I just got a haircut with a lot of layers (more than I was expecting! VERY short in places) that I can barely get into a ponytail. I like it a lot.

a few suggestions --
ok, i know its gonna be hard to pick one of these, but try...
go for a consultation at your hair dressers and they will advise you,
my suggestion depending on if you want something different is to go to a Toni & Guy salon, their hair styles are the best and the most up to date,
and the stylists go through vigorous training so they know what they are
doing. Hair care is easy if you have the right products, but none of that cheap supermarket crap, I had long thick wavy hair down to my ass then I got it all cut off and straightened coloured,heavily textured (layers) and Im amazed its easier to look after than long hair plus I can still put it up and can do anything with it but its more funkier than the boring long hair look....and by the sounds of it you are donating to a good cause!
