My Parents Are Trying To Seize Control Of My Money, But...!

Basically I want to get into a career as a film director, and have decided to make my own feature film after saving up a lot of money. But people think I am crazy for wanting to do this, and everyone is telling me absolutely not to.

But now since then, and now that I am closer to getting the ball rolling, the pressure for me to quit is so much higher, and I feel like everyone is just at my legs trying to pull me away. Even my parents think it's a huge mistake and waste of so much money as the movie will never sell. They think I have gone insane, and are trying to seize control of my savings, cause I am mentally unfit.

I understand they care and they mean well, but what can I do to get them to be more supportive. If I lose it all, then I am back to square one, but what can I do to make them see that it may be a necessary risk?

I don't think you can convince them. You have to safeguard your money. If you are old enough to get completely away from them until your project has been made a reality it's your best bet in my opinion.

@harmonica,
Axxording to your previous posts you are age 37. If you’re not a minor, why are you having an issue with using your own finances? You have control of your own money. How can anyone legally stop you? Have you been declared mentally incompetent?

I take the man to mean what he says and respond accordingly. If I get misled it's no skin off anybody's nose.

@harmonica,
Are you living on your own? Do you live at your parents' house and are they supporting you otherwise?

If you are are your own and are completely independent of them - then it is all on you. You should just make it clear to them that you understand the risks and are willing to take them. And that you will NOT move back with them if you lose everything - in other words you should be in a position where you are not financially impacting your parents in any way if you want to take this sort of risk.

Otherwise they should have a say as they are being impacted if you make a poor financial risk.

If they are taking care of you financially - and you take this risk you may find yourself out on your own with nothing. Are you willing to take this risk if this were the case?

@harmonica,
Harmonica,

I think you should see a therapist. I suggested this in the other thread. I think it would be a good idea.

In this case, a therapist would be a detached third party (your parents obviously are emotionally involved). You can tell your parents "look, I am taking care of my mental health". And therapist can help you navigate this from a perspective that isn't in the middle of it.

Take care of yourself first.

Just tell them you've decided not to do the movie project. That'll get them off your back. And quit telling them things they're going to judge you for.

You seem closer to 17 than 37, btw.

True if you are completely independent of them - then there is no reason to mention anything to them about your project.

I guess I got the impression maybe you were living with them (or off their finances) because at 37 that would be the only reason they should tell you what to do or even have a say unless you ask them for advice. And even then it is your option whether you consider it at all.

@maxdancona,
I live at home still and pay the rent. I haven't decided where to live yet and where to buy a house yet, because I want to work in the film industry but don't know where to live for that yet, and thought it's best to make the feature film first, market that, hopefully it sells, then based hopeful success from that, I can then get other jobs from that and know where to live for those jobs after more so.
