Which is clearer and a better choice:

A light cleaning to prepare for painting was completed.
or
A light cleaning was completed to prepare for painting.

@LBrinkmann,
I would leave out 'a light', other than that I prefer the first one, but they're both okay.

The surfaces have been prepared for painting.

This comprised, inter alia, inspecting, dusting, washing, scraping, patching, filling and sanding where required.
