I was walking down the street after work last night...

to meet a friend to play chess. This is downtown Milwaukee, so when I heard a faint roar quickly growing really really loud I had a brief uneasy feeling. As the roar got louder and nearer I realized it was coming from behind me. I turned around and gazed up toward the sky just in time to see one of these fly right over my head.

He must not have been much more than a couple of hundered yards over my head. I watched as he flew over the city and once he reached the lake pointed his nose to the sky, kicked on the afterburners and rocketed straight up. It was absolutely awsome.

Some years ago I was driving from San Diego to Phoenix and was about El Centro when up ahead I noticed a bunch of cars that had pulled over to the shoulder of the highway. I slowed down thinking it was an accident but then I saw it was people watching the Blue Angels practising. I was driving a hire car, Pontiac Sunbird, top down, so I took advantage of the fact I could look right up in the air at them. My (then) wife's screaming told me I should pull over so I did and joined everyone else watching them. An absolutely magical moment for this down under tourist, one of those special moments that can't be planned. We watched them for about 15 minutes before they finished. That is a lovely memory. Thanks for bringing it back for me.

Watching them over murky Lake Michigan is one thing... watching them over the wide expanse of the Pacific ocean must have been amazing. It is the unplanned timing of those little suprises that make them so memorable.

I was amazed at how close they flew together. Perfectly still (except for the whole forward motion thing of course) and perfectly aligned. It has always been a dream of mine to get to fly in a jet like that... think if I stand on the beach with my thumb up one might stop and give me a ride?

Edited to ad: Oh you said you were driving from San Diego... well it still must have been really cool.

Our Roulettes used to come over my place so low when we had the Formula One Grand Prix in Adelaide that I used to swear I could see their nostril hairs!!! Amazing - but actually quite scary when they were so often doing very hairy things right over you.

As for the Hornets and F111s zooming in ultra low right over the house - the NOISE - almost beyond hearing and into the purely visceral.

Yes jp I was driving from SD to Yuma on that leg. It was late afternoon and a clear blue sky. Just absolutely jaw-dropping. I thought about getting the camera out but I wouldn't have been able to keep up. I drove my wife nuts babbling about it all the way to Yuma (some people have no sense of priorities Very Happy ) Oh and then we went to Tucson and I drove past Davis-Monthan AFB and down the road between all the aircraft in the storage area (I wondered if they'd miss an F-4) and then spent a day staring at things at the Pima Air Museum and of course there was the incident when I nearly had a prang staring at an A-10 coming in to land........ Very Happy

There were a few people that literally hit the deck when a particulaly low flying plane suddenly shot from behind a building and went right over us. Kind of funny but I have to admit I jumped a bit myself since I wasn't expecting it.

i can only imagine the tin-foil hat wearers. They were probably grabbing supplies and running for their make shift bomb shelters they dug in their back yards. Very Happy

Saw a similar sight this past spring while watching my daughter's T-ball game. Unfortunately they were not as low. There were three flying so close together you thought the wings were going to touch. They flew over several times. It was so cool.

That is so awesome! My dad had season tickets to the National Championship Air Races every year in Reno for about 30 years and many times I went with he and my mom. The precision air teams, like the Blue Angels and the Canadian Snowbirds were always amazing.

For about the last 5 or so years, I have gone to San Francisco every year for what they call "Fleet Week". And that is totally mind boggling! Watching the Blue Angels fly in formation right between the huge pillars of the Golden Gate Bridge will take your breath away!!

I never, ever tire of air shows or lose the thrill of watching the amazing power and performance of these magnificent men in their flying machines!

When I was in Seattle the Blue Angels were practicing -- or rehearsing, whatever the hell it is they do -- over the Puget Sound for abouta week straight. Right over my office several times a day. Gets old really fast. Wanted the bastards to go nose first into the water.

Arf!

Seriously, though, it was a major nuisance for days on end -- and all for pageantry.

I could see that. They are very loud. And use a lot of fuel.

The last flight I took the captain came on the PA and played some trivia with us. He asked how much fuel a 747 uses at cruising speed for our trip. I can't remember the exact amount but it was something crazy like enough to gas up 1500 (or was it 150) cars for a year. Either way... that is a lot of oil being used.

I found this:

Quote:
A plane like a Boeing 747 uses approximately 1 gallon of fuel (about 4 liters) every second. Over the course of a 10-hour flight, it might burn 36,000 gallons (150,000 liters). According to Boeing's Web site, the 747 burns approximately 5 gallons of fuel per mile (12 liters per kilometer).

This sounds like a tremendously poor miles-per-gallon rating! But consider that a 747 can carry as many as 568 people. Let's call it 500 people to take into account the fact that not all seats on most flights are occupied. A 747 is transporting 500 people 1 mile using 5 gallons of fuel. That means the plane is burning 0.01 gallons per person per mile. In other words, the plane is getting 100 miles per gallon per person! The typical car gets about 25 miles per gallon, so the 747 is much better than a car carrying one person, and compares favorably even if there are four people in the car. Not bad when you consider that the 747 is flying at 550 miles per hour (900 km/h)!

Wonder how much more crude (if any) goes toward jet fuel than toward 87 octane...

I still live in Seattle and they still do it. It'll happen about 2-3 weeks from now. It's fun for a while, but four days of it does get a bit old, especially if you live near the lake.

On the other hand, a friend has a bbq every year, and his place has a roof deck. Great place to suck down a beer or three and cheer on our military...
