I read a sci-fi short story many years ago, in the 1960s. It was about how the news media, through the subtle use of language, was able to control a large population. Can anyone tell me the name of the story and who wrote it?

That’s a very vague outline, can you be more specific.
JG Ballard wrote a short story called The Subliminal Man, that could be it.
@PCM,
Izzy is right you need if possible to come up with more details as it could even be a small part of a Robert Heinlein story from that period.
