How much cash do you usually carry around?

Do you routinely carry $20, $50, $80 around, or do you ususally have less than 75 cents in change in your pocket or handbag?

What's your rationale for carrying the cash (or not)?

With the advent of debit cards, it's not so bad, but we've all stood behind someone in the pharmacy writing a check for a pack of gum.

$20 if I'm lucky. I usually just use my debit card. Yes, I am the debit card generation.

Prior to debit cards I would normally carry a couple hundred dollars in cash. Since debit cards I usually carry loose change and maybe ten dollars.

I don't have a debit card, so here's 2 more questions....

Don't you have to keep all your receipts to reconcile your checkbook so you know how much you still have?

Do you ever find yourself spending more than you would have than if you used cash?

I guess people used to ask the same questions about credit cards, which I use to buy non day to day items, like clothes, pharmacy medications, art, furniture - things I planned but don't want to pay until the end of the month.

I don't keep the receipt to reconcile....I know roughly how much I have available and I also have an overdraft if I ever hit the limit. My card is for $1200.00 per day, do I don't over extend. I only use the debit card for what I would otherwise use for cash. Purchases over what would normally be in my pocket for cash could easily be put on a credit card. At least if I lose my wallet, I have not lost my money. :-)

The problem with debit cards is that some retailers use services that charge a transaction fee. I put just about everything on my mileage credit card, but I always like to have at least $100 in cash. The least of my concerns would be the cash if I lost my wallet.

I'll generally have $20-40 in my wallet, unless I'm going out drinking, it's more.

I don't keep receipts.

I don't think I tend to spend more because of the checking card, which I use for 99% of my non-cash purchases(occassionally using a real credit card). I've gotten a little better at not spending money on stupid things. Emphasize "little."

My ex-husband told me a story once - At one point he was a taxi driver working nights in New York.

When his shift was over, he would routinely walk home that night w/ more than a thousand in his pocket (he couldn't take it to the cab company until the next day)
He said he was never bothered because he looked like he was some poor guy walking around.
