WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF AN ASTEROID THE SIZE OF EUROPE IMPACTED THE EARTH

It could be surmised that not even bacteria would survive. It would be a hard reset for the Earth. Even those on the opposite side of the impact, it would be only minutes before the sound wave would encircle the planet, the sheer volume of which would literally, not only destroy any sense of hearing, but likely cause instant death. This sound wave would likely come back around several times, about like an echo. Of course that wouldn't matter because right behind that sound wave would be a blast wave of such pressure and intensity that it would absolutely flatten and destroy anything in its path. Cities, forests, entire mountain ranges....gone in seconds. Then the Earth's crust would likely be transformed into molten rock. It would be quite a few millennia before any living being could visit the surface, let alone have any chance at all of returning to live there. About the only proof that we ever existed at all would be Voyagers 1 and 2 (and maybe a few other space explorers we've sent out to explore the solar system.

@Vette888,
wouldn't it depend upon the angle in which the asteroid hit earth ? perhaps a glancing blow would merely knock us out of orbit, perhaps causing the human race to suffer a slow lingering death as we spiral slowly away from the sun ( or toward it)?

@Vette888,
Who’d care? We’d all be dead and earth would be rubble. No planet, nothing to land on, and no atmosphere.

@Vette888,
What do you surmise we should do to stymie and thwart this terrific threat?

We are already doing it.

We apparently intend to destroy the planet without the aid of a killer asteroid...so that when one hits (if one does) nobody will be harmed, because the planet will be lifeless.

I'm pretty agnostic on that outcome and apoplectically atheistic on the assertion of intent.

I was rather hoping that Vette might answer this question.

Much as I agree with you on a likely scenario, the question was how to prevent an asteroid "the size of europe" ( orders of magnitude two to three times larger than that most recent event) from colliding with earth.
