Here’s the question:

Three resistors ( 30 ohms, 80 ohms, 100 ohms) each have a voltage rating of 100 VDC. If these resistors are connected in series, can they be connected to a 240 VDC power supply without damage. Answer yes or no. Show explanation or calculations on the back of this page .

Steps to solve:
1) Compute the overall resistance for the three resistors together.
2) Compute the current in the circuit using I = V/R
3) Compute the voltage drop across each resistor using V = IR

The answer is no if that helps.

So the overall resistance is 210

The current in the circuit is 1.14A

I did 240V divided by the total resistance 210 = 1.14

To find E3 I did 1.14 amps x 100 ohms ( R3) and its 114.29 V

The voltage rating is 100 VDC. So is this enough proof and calculations to show that it would cause damage and not work .
