Beijing: Police found 28 baby girls hidden in suitcases aboard a long-distance bus in Southern China, apparently being smuggled for sale, a police officer and the Beijing Morning News confirmed Saturday.
The babies found in Guangxi were all under 3 months old. One died after they were found.
Traffic Officers, acting on a tip, made the discovery Monday when the bus stopped at an expressway toll plaza in Binyang, a town in the Guangxi region.
This issue is quite disgusting - but this is something that the government, any government, as much as they would like to prevent, may not be able to. Smuggling is a ... shall we say personal action, like any crime really - you can legislate and legislate and legislate, but will people listen to it?
As for the issue of baby girls and China, there is still a misunderstanding that Chinese prefer girls over boys - that is not true anymore. The younger generation (and many in the older generation as well, or I would not be alive today) do not care - as long as its their own, they will love the child.
