Listening to the the TV and Radio I’ve noticed some people are deliberately not using articles before Proper Nouns.
An example from a DJ would be “Next we will be playing Carpenters.”
Rather than “Next we will be playing The Carpenters”
Is this a new trend? If so where has it come from, is there an advantage to speaking in this way?
Thanks in advance for your response.
@Jeremy1922,
It's beyond me, too.
I would say "We will be playing The Carpenters.
Still, I would also say "We will be playing Jefferson Starship." without the article.
@roger,
Theyre all making us speak CANADIAN. Up there everybody goes "to hospital" for medical treatment. Canada must be saving up all their articles to help start their fires in winter
@Joeblow,
How else you gonna heat your igloos?
@roger,
In Newfoundland I think they mostly just burn their aitches.
@Joeblow,
I've talked to Gezzy - way back when, and her aitches were intact. Of course, that was New Brunswick.
@roger,
Lard tunderin Jaysus Roger.
I think she is an american expat. I've no idea what she burns to keep her igloo warm.
@Joeblow,
But now I wonder how she's doing!
@Joeblow,
So do I. I lost track when her email was compromised and used for total spam.
@roger,
Gezzy's got (or at least had) more of a Boston sound than Canajun east coast
@ehBeth,
That just reminded me of a time back in 2007. I was in the hospital and had calls from both of you. I was pretty doped up, and not sure who I had been saying what to whom.
Good times! in some respects, anyway.
