A magnetar is a type of neutron star believed to have an extremely powerful magnetic field. The magnetic field decay powers the emission of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, particularly x-rays and gamma rays. The magnetic field is a thousand trillion times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field. If you were to be unlucky enough to be just about a thousand miles from a magnetar, the magnetic force would kill you instantly by rearranging all the atoms and molecules in your body and the gravitational forces would literally tear you apart. A magnetar just 100,000 miles away from Earth would wipe out all the data in every credit card in the world. Magnetars can reach a surface temperatures of 18 million degrees Fahrenheit. A magnetar generates a gravitational pull so powerful that a marshmallow impacting the stars surface would hit with the force of a thousand hydrogen bombs. A magnetar has a radius of only about 12 miles. One teaspoon of a magnetar weighs as much as Mount Everest. When two neutron stars merge to form a magnetar, the resulting magnetic field is a quadrillion times stronger than the magnetic field that deflects compass needles at the Earth's surface. In one-tenth of a second, the star's magnetic bursts produce the equivalent energy output of the Sun.
