Pet adoptions surge during coronavirus lockdown - is this really good?

@Linkat,
They had a fairly long call-in on CBC radio (sort of like our NPR) about this today. The rescues are getting really creative with their foster/adopt process - zoom tours of homes instead of the normal in-person assessments on top of the regular reference checks. Looking into a new tablet so we could possibly/maybe try a zoom foster tour application.

Shelters remain closed for the time being. Whatever animals are in the shelters are staying put. Rescues are trying to get to strays before they get into shelter situations. Because of the border closures no pets are coming up from US - but a few are still being flown in from Egypt.

@Linkat,

Where do you think those little furballs we call "dogs" came from? Do you think wild packs of these creatures ever roved the plains searching for wild fancy feast before humans came along?

Yes.... dogs were created by humans based on what humans wanted in a pet (in this case small and cute). This little guy has no ability to hunt, or to defend himself, or to survive on its own. His survival value is his cuteness to humans.

@ehBeth,
Here it depends on the shelter/adoption agency in most cases - perhaps some are determined by state.

Most seems to still be allowing adoptions but by appointments only

@Linkat,
Shelters are non-essential businesses so they are completely shutdown by government law here. Very few rescues even make it to the status of being incorporated businesses so they're really stuck.
