entryway vs entrance

Hi

I've got a somewhat over-scrupulous question.

I'm wondering about what entryway means exactly. The dictionary says that it is "a way in to somewhere or something; an entrance". The composition of the word, however, suggests that it is a type of entrance. Is entryway, indeed, perfectly synonymous with entrance, or is it an entrance that is also a hallway?

@johannornth,
Since there is also a word "entranceway" I'd say that both "entryway" and "entranceway" are distinct from an "entrance" and suggest a passage (a way) to a point where people (or animals, or water, or germs) may enter.

However, if you are in real estate, an entryway can mean an area before you get to the entrance. An entryway can even be outside of the house, like a covered porch.

See how important it is to give a “context” for your question?
