@johannornth,
My personal difference is that I know how to pronounce 'fortuitous'.
Otherwise, I know of no practical difference.

@johannornth,
"Serendipitous" is more specific than "fortuitous," as it relates to a fortuitous discovery, or fortuitous chance.

@johannornth,
Serendipity is a lucky accident, something that yield results. When Alexander Fleming’s Petri dishes got infected with mould he discovered penicillin, that was serendipitous.

When his bus arrived on time meaning he wasn’t late, it was merely fortuitous.

@johannornth,
They made a big thing about the word in the last Jon Pertwee Doctor Who episode featuring Jo Grant.

Jo’s future husband discovers his Amazonian mushroom not only kills the plague it also kills the maggots carrying it, but he gets bitten by a maggot before he can tell anyone.

He’s delirious and keeps saying serendipity over and over again.

Immediately after leaving Doctor Who Katy Manning, who played Jo Grant, hosted an arts and crafts show called Serendipity.
