What made some armies so effective?

I'll give some examples throughout history: Alexander the Great, Roman Empire, Mongols, Ottoman Empire, Napoleon, British Empire, Nazi Germany.

Some of these are through obvious technological advantage. Such as the British Empire against it's colonies. Nazi Germany was the first to use blietzkrieg.

But what about Mongols? Napoleon? Alexander? Rome? What was their major advantage?

Was it sheer numbers?

The most important thing is Economics.

The country that can best recruit, train, feed and arm their armies will win. That takes money and resources.
