Years ago, Le Carre reviewed short stories for, I think, The Writer's Digest. He read one of my stories. He said that had I written it in the 40s, it would have been a sensation. Although he said he might add it to an anthology, if he were preparing one, ultimately he did not like the story. I liked the fact that he did not lie to me.

That doesn't sound like he didn't actually like your story. Alas.
I like his take on Trump & Brexit as embryonic fascism.
