Sample Distributions for Mann Whitney test

Hi there,

How is the assumption of two similar distributions accommodated by the Mann Whitney test prior placing observations in ascending order? For instance, if ranked in ascending order, all distributions become negatively skewed! How is this assumption met without true parametric testing because if it is not we are simply guessing using the Mann Whitney test?
