@InButNotOf,
They twirl their skirts. They don't twirl in their skirts.

@roger,

@InButNotOf,
Maybe it's the same reason a dog chases its tail.

Because they can and they know it makes people wonder.

@glitterbag,
A really good twirl needs a weighted hem.

Off topic, but did you ever see Rita Hayworth dance? She knew how to twirl, and was Fred Astaire's best partner, ever.

@Sturgis,
"Because they can" is probably the answer.

Does a poodle chase its tail on a poodle skirt?

@Sturgis,
Don't poodles have boned tails to keep them from biting it?

@Sturgis,
the way you worded it sounds like
someone tossed a poodle skirt on the
ground and a poodle came along
and decided to chase it's tail on
the skirt (as in under it's feet)

@roger,
Is that where the phrase "give a dog a bone" comes from?

(With a knick knack paddywhack give a dog a bone, this old man came rolling home)

@roger,
i don't really care for poodles so they could bite
their own tails of for all i care.

german shepherds, labs (black, white, etc)
golden retrievers. and such like are the
real dogs, those are the dogs to talk (good) about

@Sturgis,
It's a knick nack Patty Wack, give the frog a loan. His old man's a Rolling Stone.

If you haven't heard the joke, I could probably put it together for you.

@InButNotOf,
And malamutes. No dog has a more expressive face than a malamute.

@InButNotOf,
Okay, frog goes into the bank for a loan, and tells the teller he wants to borrow some money. A lot of money. The teller says that if he wants a lot of money, he will have to see Ms Whack in the loan department.

He looks around and finally finds a name on a desk that says 'Patricia Whack', so he goes up and says he wants to borrow a lot of money. Of course, she needs to know his name so he tells her he is Kermit. Kermit Yeager. Okay she says, but if he wants a lot of money, the bank is going to need some collateral. Kermit reaches into a pocket, pulls out something that looks kind of like a small, glass figurine of an elephant, and hands it to her. Just a minute, she sez.

Looking kind of dubious, she checks in with the manager of the loan department and explains that a frog named Kermit Yeager wants to use the little glass thing as collateral to borrow a lot of money.

The manager says "It's a knickknack Patty Whack; give the frog a loan. His old man's a Rolling Stone"

It helps if you go back far enough to remember The Children's Marching Song, from the movie called The Inn of the Seventh Happiness"

I meant 'bobbed' tails, of course, but boned seems to have worked out better.

@roger,
Psst Roger, all dogs have bones in their tails.

The poodle on the old poodle skirt was a standard size poodle. On my 6th birthday I got a red felt poodle skirt (dog leash coiled down to white standard poodle with a snazzy color)..I remember a red and white jersey fabric blouse/shirt and I'm pretty sure a pair of blue and white saddle shoes.

One other thing, the Standard poodle was used for hunting and retrieving game animals. earlier in it's history...and it's the only version of the poodle that the dog designers and back yard/puppy mill breeders haven't mananged to ruin.
