Thanks in advance for any advice!
I am in the midst of making some major life decisions. I am a veterinarian and I work at a really nice practice. My job is not perfect, but a lot better of an atmosphere than many other clinics. The worst part is that I have felt taken advantage of since the owner barely works and I'm basically running the clinic on my own. The other down side is that I hate where I live. I'm younger than most of the population here. It's also very family oriented and I'm single, so my chances of finding someone are slim to none here. I also have not been able to make friends in this area and I've lived here for almost 3 years.
I decided to consider starting my own practice in a location that I love. This would mean moving and leaving my job of course. While I'm not sad to leave this location, I do feel sad about leaving my job and the house that I own. However, I know I will have a more fulfilling life if I move to this new location. Where I live now, I feel like all that I am is a veterinarian. I have no life outside of my job because everything that I want to do is 45 minutes away and I get out of work too late to make it to anything on time. But I worry that I won't actually be able to start a practice and that will leave me with having to work at a crappy clinic somewhere, and then while I might love where I live, I won't enjoy my job.
With all that said, what would YOU do? Do you prioritize living where you love or loving where you work?
@rcphill,
Leave and don't think twice about it.
Be in a place where you are happy. And get out of a work situation where you're being used for higher level work but not being paid accordingly.
This should, honestly, be a no-brainer.
Are you going to have the $$ to start up your own practice? There will be costs to do that, for sure.
In any case, live where you love. You may have to work at another clinic for a while, but at least you would have a goal.
Have you done any research into whether opening a practice would be profitable for you? Are there a lot of other vet practices in the area? Is there a need for one? How will you advertise, get new patients? Do you have any contacts in the area so you can get clients?
I agree that moving seems the best option for you personally but you should check to see if it is financially viable for you. Also you say you own a home - how is the market there for selling a home? I know where I live if you have a reasonably priced home you can sell quickly.
Also see if you could find a clinic that you might be happy working in. Have you checked any out? That might be an option - who knows maybe you will find one that is even better than your current situation.
@Linkat,
Here is another thought - even if you were to start out at a "crappy" clinic - you could work there a couple of years, get to know your clients to the point they love you --- then you are in a position to start your own office with potential clients and references already.
But be careful that you do not sign a "non-compete" that will legally bind you.
