In “ I think we will discover new particles and open a new road for physics beyond the Standard Model” , is the expression "open a new road" proper here? Is it popular or you would use others such as "blaze a trail" instead?

I favor 'open a new road'. 'Blaze' just sounds a little too dramatic a word choice. Neither is wrong.
