is there anyway on this website to make a setting of notifications to your e mail so that you know there is an update in a discussion or post

I'm pretty sure there is no such feature. I did look at 'My Preferences' and didn't find such an option.

in the early days it was possible to get email notifications, but i don't think the highlighted link ever worked
after the 2008 software overhaul...
