In the Fifties my aunt used these to ward off the frost on her orange trees.

In south Florida, they mostly kept piles of old tires. Doused with kerosene, they put out lots of 'smudge', and that far south, they were more cost effective. Probably outlawed now a days.

wanna buy some?. Up here in apple and peach country we used a much bigger smudgie. Itd carry Bunker C the dirtier the better. Youd light em after dark and the valleys 'd look like a coal cracker was working nearby . Nowadays they use mostly water sprays down to about the mid 20's F. Below that, yer screwed.
