"prefer" and "prefer to choose"

I found the use of "prefer to choose", e.g., "Experiments have shown that lefties prefer to choose objects on the left as opposed to the right". Why not "prefer objects" in this sentence? What is the difference between "prefer to choose something" and "prefer something"? Thanks a lot!

If you say someone prefers to choose objects on the left, it implies that there are several objects on the table and they are selecting one. If you say that prefer objects on the left, it could also mean that they place objects to the left when setting things down (or it could mean the same as the previous sentence.)
