Picking up from discard pile

My partner has displayed six 9's. It's my turn, and on the last round, I picked up my pony. In it, there were three 9's. Now there is a 9 in the discard pile. Can I pick up the 9 in the discard pile, use one of the 9's to complete my canasta, and then put down the three 9's?
