Graphics card overheated?

My mom has had her computer for just about a year and a half. Her graphics card is a GTX 980 TI and recentlyit just glitches out and restarts the computer. This is even without playing games or any strenuous activity. We took it to the shop and found out that it has been overheating. They said there is possible fixes but they would get back to us on it. Are we going to have to buy a whole new graphics card, or is there a way to fix our current one?

I assume that overheating when not even under load means there is some sort of problem that needs repair. Presumably repair is possible, but it all depends on the exact details of what is going wrong.

Is it under warranty? If so you might want to get it repaired someplace official, where the repairs will be covered by the warranty, and where the repairs will not violate the warranty for future repairs.

If it is under warranty and repair is not possible, they might provide you a new card for free.

@Jerryjones,
Were you foolish enough to overclock your system?
