Is it "to set the DVD player" or "to set up the DVD player"?

You can have both (depending on the actual action you're depicting).

Please, set the DVD player down.
She set up the DVD player over there.

@tsarstepan,
In America maybe. Over here we'd say set up the DVD player, meaning to connect it to the telly, plug it in and generally make it ready for use.

We never say set down, we say put down.
