Lard . . . I meant lard. Does anyone know where you can find lard these days?

@Setanta,
Stay away from Crisco. Crisco ain't lard. Crisco is shortening.

@Setanta,
My husband's Aunt Olivia kept a tub of lard under the sink. I had no idea it was there, I didn't even know you could buy lard by the tubful.....I've never really looked for lard, but if your butcher doesn't carry it...I suppose you could check Amazon.

Why do you need lard? Are you on a biscuit making frenzy or do you plan on greasing up some axles?

For the highest quality, look for "leaf lard". I ordered a pound online. Nice stuff. It has a different structure than regular rendered lard.

I know why. The lard bit starts at 11.45 but it's all good.

HEB grocers were still selling lard last time I noticed. Say what you will, the lard we used when I was a kid was likely healthier than the hydrogenated vegetable oils.

For some reason, this question immediately makes me think of some weird deleted scene from Fight Club (in my fantasy that is... I can see Edward Norton running around screaming where he can find lard these days).

Shortening is just no good for sex--it warms up and gets runny.

@Setanta,
Collect your own as we did in the olden days....collect the fat from any meats you cook and keep it

@dlowan,
we mostly do that. since we use a nice bit of bacon, we always have a nice batch of ham flavored lard.

When we join an Amish group in butchering hogs each year, we all split up a nice batch of lard "Loaves". They keep well frozen.. rendering is an art that is easily learned.

My grandmother had a large tin which held about a half a gallon, and which had the word GREASE stamped in the side. She kept only the bacon fat, although if she were cooking something, say fried potatoes, she'd cook them in the grease available from the rest of the cooking. What I really loved was that she cooked the popcorn in bacon fat.

In all seriousness, it's never been a problem getting lard over here.

Most supermarkets have something like this.

Crisco has always been, and probably will remain, a complete mystery.

@Setanta,
thats a WWII antique. Ive seen those at shows caus they were handed out by state police in PA. (The PA ones had a keystone symbol uner th word "GREASE". Then the grease was collected by some neighbir wag (Ive been told this by may mom in years past).

I knew the grease was used in the manufacture of glycerine for ammo and explosives.
Theyd make diesel esters and glycerine from the same operation. I dont know where other manufacture of xplosives was done xcept around Wilmington Del where the Dupont and Atlas works were.
