What is this bug? Baby cockroach? (insect identification) Please HELP

Found dead bug about 1 centimeter long indoors (located in Northern California). It was red/orange/brown in color with a hard shell abdomen and 6 legs and 2 "antennas".

@ducks,
Could you turn the insect over and take a shot from the top?
It's difficult to narrow it down from these photos, but I'd say it's probably a beetle.

Hard to say for sure, but it does not look like a cockroach from the photos.
