I, like most people, maintain several email accounts, one of them being Gustavratzenhofer@-----

I just checked that particular account and this letter from Africa was there waiting for me....

Dear gustav ratzenhofer ,

I am Barrister Mathew Komo, a solicitor at law, personal attorney to Engr.D.B.Ratzenhofer , a national Of your country, who used to be a contractor and importer here in Lome Togo. Here in after shall be referred to as my client. On the 12th of January 2002, my client, his wife and their only daughter were involved in a ghastly motor accident along Nouvissi express Road. All occupants of the vehicle unfortunately lost there lives. Since then I have made several enquiries to your embassy here to locate any of my clients extended family relatives, this is to no avail.

After these several unsuccessful attempts,I decided to track his last name over the Internet, to locate any member of his family hence I contacted you.I have contacted you to assist in repartrating the fund
valued at US$15 million left behind by my client before it gets confisicated or declared unserviceable b y the Union Banque Togolaise where this huge amount were deposited.

The said Bank has issued me a notice to provide the next of kin or have his account confisicated within the next twenty one official working days.

Since I have been unsuccesful in locating the relatives for over 3years now, I seek the consent to present you as the next of kin to the deceased since you have the same last names, so that the proceeds of this account can be paid to you. Therefore, on receipt of your
positive response, we shall then discuss the sharing ratio and modalities for transfer.I have all necessary information and legal documents needed to back you up for claim. All I require from you is your honest cooperation to enable us see this transaction through.
I guarantee that this attract no risk at all for it will be executed under legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the law.

On the receipt of your response i will furnish yo u with detailed clarification as it relates to this mutual benefit transaction.

Best Regards.
Barrister Mathew Komo(Esq.)

I sent a return letter asking about the details of their deaths. Did they suffer? Was there one of those St. Christopher statures on the dashboard?

Hopefully these questions will be answered and hopefully my relatives died a quick death. The thought of them busted up and bleeding and suffering in that car wreck is very disturbing to me.

I also sent my credit card number in case the good barrister, Matthew Komo, needs any financial assistance in this matter.

As far as you A2K member, I would ask that you take a moment to bow your heads and say a silent prayer for my relatives.

Thank you.

Suffering by the swamp,

Gustvav

Very funny, Gus!

Can you believe that some people actually fall prey to scams like this?

These scam artists are counting on dim-witted, greedy people to bite on their bait. Who wouldn't want to share in a $15 million dollar windfall?

What they want you to do, my dear, is travel to Africa to allegedly sign papers at the bank to have the funds released to you . . . but that will never happen. It's a hoax. You will be met at the airport and will be taken hostage.

You will have to arrange to pay enormous sums of money to your captors in order to regain your freedom from a tormenting and torturous experience. If you're lucky, you may emerge from the ordeal alive . . . but there are no guarantees.

But . . . people fall for these scams. Unbelievable.

Debra, did you think our barrister friend did a reasonable job of impersonating an attorney in his letter?

scams
SCAM CENTRAL

There are several variations, but one of the main scams is when the the scam artists want you to be the "next of kin" to accept money that has been left in a bank for years.

The scam artists always begin with an urgent tone and a specific deadline.

The letters are generally sent by a supposed Prince, a Chief, a Dr., wife of a General, a Barrister, Solicitor, Lawyer or a Bank Official. Or the letter writer is the relative of a supposed prince, a Chief, a Dr...well, you get the picture.

Everything about the business proposal is said to be "safe and reliable."

Scam artists would love for you to travel to their home turf. Once you're there the "bait and switch" happens. Extenuating circumstances and delays cause them to demand the payment of more money from you before the millions of dollars can be released into your account ("The government didn't informs us of the need for a particular document, which costs an additional $3000"). You pay and then wait and wait, until you run out of money or patience. They figure that since you have already paid a lot of money to get to Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Atlanta, Dallas, London, Amsterdam, Spain, or Toronto -- you will probably call back home and convince "Uncle Bob" to wire you a few thousand dollars to take care of the final document. And, of course, you'll promise "Uncle Bob" that you'll give him double or triple his money once you are fabulously wealthy!

If the scam artists get you to travel to West Africa, you will be fortunate to leave alive. There are a few horror stories of businessmen being picked up at the airport and then found dead a few miles away. (In the summer of 1995, an American businessman was found murdered not far from the airport in Lagos. Numerous missing-person reports have been filed over the past decades.)

If you travel to the scam artists in West Africa or South Africa there are also ways for you to be kidnapped, one way or another. They can arrange for a bribed government official to take your passport. It is not beyond the police to participate in this illegal activity. You aren't going back home until you pay a "gratuity" or "processing fee" to get your passport returned. Plus, staying in these countries without a passport is dangerous, to say the least.

It gives me a kind of warm feeling to have my own personal cheerleader. Thanks, CJ.

Oh, and by the way, could you change your avatar to one where you're vigorously waving pom-poms?

That would mean a lot to me.

I think if Gus decides to go it might be like that O.Henry story "The Randsom of Red Chief" - the villians might end up begging us to take him back.

Ya'll are making it sound like I should cancel my trip to Nigeria. I am to receive 12.6 Million British Pound Sterling which according to the letter I received can only be taken out of the country by a fat American.

Should I stop dieting until I come back?
