When writing a story about a 12 y/old who doesn't know she's an Amazon, is it better to start with her finding a trolls tunnel (Amazon enemies), or with her parents being verbally abusive at home and her being lonely?

@felines are superior,
No idea.

That said, the girl is probably an Amazonian, not an Amazon.

You don't provide enough context here. Is this the fantasy life of a 12-year-old, or are you creating a sword and sorcery fantasy world in which she actually is an Amazon? If the former, then describing abusive parents and loneliness would go a long way to explaining her escape into a fantasy world. If the latter, the situation with the 'rents and her loneliness seems a needless complication, and something which would be difficult to work into the story line.

Assuming you're the writer. Write what you would want to read. Books by committee are like movie scripts by committee (or a half dozen writers or more). They tend to suck badly as they tend to play it safe and boring in order to please as many viewpoints as there are many writers.
