Don’t know if my bf wants a serious long term relation

So I’ve been dating my bf for a year now. We always talk about future plans and how we both wanna get married and have kids at some point. I know he wants to have kids and get married but I don’t know if I’m the person who he wants to do all that stuff with. Today his dad asked him if he was planning to get engaged and when he said “not for a long time”. I don’t expect him get engaged soon but I’m expecting to in about 2 years. I’m his second gf and he told me that he dated the first one for 3 years but she kept cheating on him repeatedly. And the relationship was on and off. It ended w him sleeping with somebody else. He said they were just living together at that point and she was cheating on him the whole time. And they were just like roommates. I’m just so confused I don’t know what future is holding for me but one thing I know is that I don’t wanan waste years dating to break up.
