Weird ethnic foods that make you question life as terrifying, meaningless and void of soul?

I found a copy of this wonderful book years ago

- good on its own, fabulous as a companion to the Aubrey/Maturin books.

@ehBeth,
To be honest I prefer mine darker than that. However, there are lots of different varieties used in chip shops depending on season, some don't go very dark regardless of how long you fry them.,

@Roberta,
Memorable in my childhood experience was my mother cooking away and in the pit was cows 👅. Tasted great, truly.

I was told to keep quiet in school or ... else.

@Ragman,
Veal tongue was at home something for special occasions, either with caper or horseradish sauce, while beef tongue was an ordinary dish served with red wine ("Madeira") sauce.

Blood Tongue ("Zungenwurst") still is a popular cold cutlery here (pig's blood, suet, bread crumbs and oatmeal with chunks of beef tongue)

My mother used to cook beef tongue when I was a kid, and I liked it. I've never cooked it and never will, but apparently the problem is getting the correct degree of doneness. Undercooked and it's tough, overcooked and it's mushy,

@coluber2001,
There's that awful joke about someone at a luncheon not being able to eat tongue because they couldn't abide something that's been in an animal's mouth, so they have an egg instead.

@izzythepush,
My mother used to buy pickled pigs feet in jars, and I loved them, but I don't eat that sort of thing anymore.

If chicken feet are used in soup, then eat all the parts except the bone. Alternatively, you can bite at one of the toes and suck in the juice. If it was grilled, as in Filipinos dish "adidas," then bite off the skin and eat just like a drumstick.

Not me, but some people.

@edgarblythe,
My best friend who was Chinese ate chicken feet. I couldn't even though I've tried many different animals and parts.

When I was a little Roberta, I ate chicken feet all the time. I remember this fondly. Word to the wise. Cut off the toe nails.

@cicerone imposter,
I have had chicken feet as part of Dim Sum. The sauce was quite good... you don't get very much meat.

They make much more sense then chicken fingers.

@Roberta,
Was it cultural for you, or did your family like it too?

@cicerone imposter,
I'm not sure I understand your question. Members of my family cooked chicken feet. Did everybody eat them? I don't remember. Is this cultural? Mebbe.

BTW, as much as I liked chicken feet, I liked chicken necks a lot more.

@Roberta,
My grandma once told me she even eats chicken heads, but she had a mischievous grin working the corners of her mouth.

@edgarblythe,
Cruelty to animals. How the poor chickens are supposed to get their food afterwards without feet or without head, I guess nobody thinks about it

@maxdancona,
We got sometimes dug quarters in a university's restaurant, which is situated at a lake. Hundreds of ducks were swimming in circles after lunchtime on those days!
