"I have been coming to Europe for 8 years"
As I thought, "come" is a momentary action, there's no way for someone to "have been coming" to a place for years.. if so, it feels like that "someone" has been stuck in a four-dimensional space or something and keep doing sth repeatedly (for years). ...
But I was told by one of my friend that this sentence actually means that "I" come to Europe many times during the 8 years and may keep coming to Europe in the future? Is that so??
@Maria Lin,
English is an idiomatic language (most languages are, but English especially so). You have to take this specific form as special case (an idiom).
I have been coming to
a place for
a period of time means exactly what your friend says. You just have to memorize these constructs; there are no consistent rules.
