just something i was wondering about - last i was aware of (c)raven's realm was in a limbo state while transitioning to this one (i guess, unless this is a successor to something inbetween). i know abuzz was where some folks went during that transition, and if memory serves it was home for some before the realm.
is this correct, or did i miss something. also, i was wondering from which generation/incarnation of this meeting place did 'the regulars' come from.
Quite a few of the "Original Crowd" indeed are/were Realmers, and a whole bunch more of the early adopters wandered in from Abuzz. You can use the Member List link found up at the top of each page to do some diggin', if ya want. The default sort is "Joined Date" and the default order is ascending. There are a number of other sorts available, sorting by "Number of Posts" ascending brings up the most prolific members. Click on a user name to see that user's Profile, and in the profile you can click on the "See All Posts From (user)". That sort order is newest posts first, so to see the earliest ones, ya gotta drill down some - you can click on the last page of posts listed to see the earliest posts. That might give ya somethin' to play with.
Scattered around the site are quite a few threads dealin' with the history of the site -
Here's One You Might Find Useful
I know yer gonna hate me, but I'm to lazy to go dig up the rest of 'em right now.
In the beginning was Abuzz. Lots of folk who were here early met there. It was fun, and you could learn lots, and discuss stuff with people from all over, but mainly from the USA, (it being a New York Times site), and be silly and stuff
Then Craven came along and looked upon Abuzz and sort of liked it and posted a lot.
Then he decided to build The Raven's Realm. And some Abuzzers also spent time there, as did a whole bunch of other people who knew not Abuzz.
As it happened, Abuzz had lost its New York Times creators' interest, and stopped having Moderators and began to become somewhat chaotic.
Meanwhile, Craven, being the enterprising sort, and having by then kind of got the site creating bug, and wanting to do something better than the Realm, decided to build another site, and began coding like mad.
As this great work of creation proceeded, darkness had come upon the face of Abuzz, and much lunaticalness had its way there, and people posted vilenesses and there was nobody to stop them. Many stayed there, and loved it despite this.
Then Craven opened Able2know, and people from Raven's Realm, and people from Abuzz who knew about the place, or were invited, or who stumbled upon it, and people who knew naught of either Abuzz or Raven's Realm but were just lucky or who found the place cos Craven is good at Search Engine Optimization (and doubtless in other mysterious ways) came here and saw that it was good.
And some Abuzz folk moved here entirely, because of the darkness that moved upon the face of Abuzz, and some posted at both while Abuzz was alive - but the NYT pulled the plug some time last year - and some more Abuzzers moved over here as to a sort of Ark.
So - some regulars initially met at Abuzz - some met on the Raven's Realm - and some first met here - and be danged if I can reliably recall who is who anymore!!!
And the place keeps outgrowing its servers and such, and Craven keeps improving the code.
But the techie stuff is beyond, or beneath, or above, or something me - I just know the social history - or some of it.
Perhaps Craven may elucidate the whole matter further at some point, and doubtless other folks know other bits.
And - WELCOME!!!!!
remember that scene in 'raiders of the lost ark' where indy lights a torch only to find himself in a viper pit??? - reminded me of my brief stint on abuzz. i must have come in at the wrong time because 'vileness' is a good description.
thanks all for the info.
