Hi
I'd like to know why it is <He called to the man> not <He called the man>?
He called to the man who took passengers across the river.

@nm23,
the first describes speaking loudly to someone who is out of speaking distance

the second describes a phone call

@ehBeth,
If we want to speak someone (not on a phone), is <I called her> incorrect?

@nm23,
Maybe if you used something like : I called her over. You need to use the full phrase/idiom.
