Which is more correct: "She put a pen on top of the fridge" or "she put a pen on the top of the fridge", and are there any AE-BE differences?

There's really no difference there. The listener or reader understands, with either sentence, that the pen is going outside the fridge and on its very top (as opposed to, say, inside but on the top shelf).
