I was wondering if there is a less confusing way to give directions in the following sentence. Thanks for any and all advice!
The mountain range extends from western Ohio south to western Kentucky, Tennessee, western Georgia, and northeastern Alabama.
The word south after Ohio seems a bit confusing. Any suggestions?

Place "south" after "extends".
