Which sentence is correct:
The clock was striking ten when I turned off the light.
The clock struck ten when I was turning off the light.
We normally use the past continuous for the longer background action with as- when- or while- clauses, thus when or while I was switching off the light, but it is also possible to use the simple past: when I looked out of the window, I saw a bird. As I walked up the path, I stumbled.
