As for the sample, I don't know the song offhand, but it sounds like something Yes or Asia would do.

I agree that it sounds like Asia in particular. This song is very fine but clearly absent in any 80s best hits compilations for some reason. I listened to Asia and Yes best of compilations but no match. I was also thinking Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Phil Collins, Foreigner, Mr Mister and so on. This song proved to be a much tougher nut to crack than expected.
